Brief Description:
Alcohol addiction is one of the biggest challenges our nation is facing. According to National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3, 2007) 32% of the total population of India are addicted to alcohol. This problem became more relevant to Compassion India when families in Wayanad, a district in North Kerala received international attention for farmers’ suicides and about 60% of the suicides were due to the excess use of alcohol. As a result families of Compassion project children have been thrown into utter poverty, ill health and debt.

These in turn directly affect the children emotionally leading them to become slow learners, introverts, innocent victims at home and exhibit characteristics which are detrimental to their growth.
Survey in other projects showed that there are more such fathers who are caught in the quagmire of alcoholism in seven clusters (regions) like East Kerala, South & Central Kerala, Hoskote, Thirunelveli, North Karnataka & Madurai clusters of Compassion India. A Seven day residential de-addiction intervention program for the fathers of their project children has been planned to release them from physical and economic poverty. The mothers will accompany the fathers during the last two days. They will be admitted in centers locally in each cluster mentioned. 50% of the families on average in each project are under the alcohol addiction. This intervention will help in improving their health, their financial status, social status and help them enjoy a healthy family environment.

De-addiction program for fathers has been divided in to 5 phases 1. Awareness and selection process. 2. Residential de-addiction camp, 3. Follow-up Meets, 4. Rehabilitation and 5. Evaluation. This program is intended to make the life of children more peaceful and enjoy their childhood to the optimum.

Objectives:

  1. 100 fathers will become sober and physically healthy.
  2. 100 families in Thirunelveli cluster will lead a debt free life and enjoy improved status in the community.
  3. Children of these families will receive personal care, attention, love and support from the family

The primary beneficiaries are the 100 alcohol addicted fathers of the children who are registered in the Compassion assisted projects in Tirunelveli Cluster.
Peace Trust plays a vital role in implementing the programme in a successful way. Peace Trust as an implementing partner together with Caruna Bal Vikas organized a Orientation Programme on Awareness and Selection Process to the Project Coordinators and CDAs in each Priject in Tirunelveli Cluster on 24.08.09 at Peace Health Centre.

Then we have selected 100 families from CSP/CDSP Project, and conducted 7 days Residencial Programme with 4 Batches.
